Merry Crossmas Details

Hello everyone,

We are totally psyched about our upcoming "Merry Crossmas" Cyclocross Weekend! Two days of bike racing fun are just what you need before the holiday season truly kicks into high gear. We have a change of venue this year, and with this difference comes some logistical changes as well.

This year's event will take place in Winston-Salem's historic Washington Park neighborhood. The racing schedule for both days is the same. You can view the race flyer here. Merry Crossmas pint glasses will be available for a $10 charitable donation on Saturday. Here is where logistics will come into play: the Merry Crossmas after-party will take place at Mock Orange Bikes beginning immediately after the CX P,1,2 race on Saturday. Bring your pint glasses to the shop and fill them up with some delicious holiday cheer from Foothills Brewery. Enjoy yourselves in the warm, dry comfort of the shop on Saturday, December 17. The next day it is back to the course for the NC Cyclocross State Championships!

Again, we are really looking forward to Merry Crossmas this year. We'll see you all on the 17th and 18th!

The Middletons in Europe

Check out this great photo of Joe and Cece Middleton in Europe. They have tackled some of France's most famous and arduous climbs aboard their Ritchey Breakaway travel bikes. They have conquered the Col d'Aspin, the Tourmalet, and Luz Ardiden in their travels. They are rocking over there! Also, note the strategically placed MOB sticker. Awesome! Thanks Joe and Cece!

M.O.B. boys at the Rhonde Van Vlaanderen

Its been said that central Europe is the cycling capital of the world. Recently Charles and Zach from the shop had the opportunity to see for themselves. The trip was a bit last minute and, excluding the few days around the actual 95th Tour of Flanders spring classic itself, was unscripted, unplanned, carefree and very awesome.

This whole trip was the result of an invitation from Lazer, a Belgium helmet manufacturer, to experience the Rhonde Van Vlaandren, or the Tour of Flanders as its known here in good ole America. We would be both riding the race course (100 miles of it anyway) and then be VIP guest spectators of the Pro race the next day.

As mentioned, the only thing we planned was our flights there and back, the rest was in the air. We took an overnight flight into Amsterdam landing at 5:30AM local time, the city was dark, misty and eerily quite. We managed to find a small cafe open at that hour and had our first of many cups of amazing coffee. We found a park bench, sat there and watched the city come alive for a routine mid-week workday. I was well aware that Amsterdam was a city of bikes, but I was still pleasantly shocked at what I witnessed over the course of the next few hours. As the sun started to rise and the light rain continued to fall, the bikes came out. At first it was just a couple as it was still early, but by 10am the city streets were packed. The coolest thing was almost no cars! Sure there was an occasional auto, service vehicle etc, but I would guess the bikes outnumbered the autos at least 100/1! Keep in mind it was about 50 degrees and rainy, but that did not stop the local business woman in her skirt and heels pedaling her way to work, often times with coffee and perhaps and umbrella in hand. We saw moms with 3 kids hanging off the bike, delivery bikes with big cargo's and the occasional motor scooter. The streets were also designed and engineered for bikes and public transportation, autos are at a distinct disadvantage, yet they were always courteous and respectful towards cyclist and pedestrians. That really impressed me.

Here in America, we are pretty quick to jump in the car and run to the supermarket just one mile down the road. Even "hard core" recreational cyclist will most likely still drive to work instead of riding a few miles. Perhaps we can all learn a little from the European culture and their attitudes. The city was chaotic, no doubt, but there was definitely a certain sense of tolerance, respect and courtesy that must exist in order for so many people to live peacefully in such a small area. I would also mention that we rarely saw any police.

After a day and the first night in a hostel in Amsterdam, we jumped on a train south to Antwerp, Belgium, headquarters of Lazer Helmets and our base for the next few days. Antwerp central train station was amazing and the city was a nice blend of new and old architecture, full of courteous people, great food and beer, and sweet bike lanes.

Saturday we hopped on the provided Ridley Damocles bikes, team Katusha bikes from last year and headed out for the 100 miles of the Tour of Flanders sportif ride. I had grand visions of battling it out with Belgian strong men in the rain and mud and wind in a "race" type ride. The reality was this was an 18,000 person cookie ride! Imagine a constant uninterrupted peloton stretching 100 miles long, that's what it was like. Constant passing, cobbles, hills, mud, cow manure, grass, ditch, sidewalk, bike path, more cobbles, mountain bikes, comfort bikes, road bikes, beginner riders, advanced riders, you name it we saw it. Nevertheless, we were determined to do some serious head down riding.

The winds were steady and gusting at times, weather was amazing, 70 degrees and sunny, dry and dusty. We hooked up with another American from Utah and hit it hard for the first 50 miles. The European riders are quirky and would jump on our wheels as we would pass and hang on as long as possible. At one point on a windy flat stretch I looked back and behind the three of us there was a train of  probably 60 riders behind us! The Flanders course is mostly rolling with a few dozen steep climbs. The two famous climbs being the cobbled Koppenburg and Muur. The climbs weren't that difficult themselves, what was crazy was finding a line through the crowds of people, many of them walking or laying on the road. We are happy to report however that we were able to cleanly ride all of the famous Flanders climbs. We enjoyed the day, stopping on occasion to take some photos and have a drink but in between it was good hard riding. Both Charles and I are big riders and we tend to turn a big gear which made this our kind of ride. It was pretty sweet riding along over rough cobbles at 30mph in sections. We were sure the bikes were going to fall apart under us but they did great! The Ridley Damocles was the perfect bike for that ride, high all around marks for sure. Our heads were safe and cool in the sweet Lazer Flandrian edition helmets as well!

The rest of the trip consisted of riding the train around Belgium and Germany stopping off at random cities we thought would be sweet. Renting or borrowing bikes or just walking we would wander around the cities and towns and check out the architecture, old castles, and cathedrals stopping to eat when we were hungry, drink when we were thirsty and sleep when we were tired. We visited Brugge, Brussels, Cologne, Langenselbold, Budigen, Frankfurt and a few more. It was an amazing trip and Europe will most defintely be the location of the next Mock Orange Bikes if we ever open one.

Garmin Edge 800

We wanted to drop you guys a line and let you know that we now have in stock the latest and greatest from Garmin GPS devices, the Edge 800.  The Garmin Edge 800 is the latest GPS cyclometer from the leader in GPS products. The Edge 800 is the first touch screen enabled GPS bike computer. It is ideal for touring, training, commuting, and for sure mountain biking! It has a built-in basemap and tracks your distance, speed, location and ascent/descent.  The base map allows the user to visually choose his/her own route while on the bike.  Use it with a heart rate monitor, speed/cadence sensor, or compatible power meter for a finely tuned analysis of your ride. The Edge 800 is designed to be durable enough to stand up to the rigors of the outdoors, but sensitive enough to respond to the touch of your gloved finger. You can read more about the Garmin Edge 800 here. This and other Garmin products are in stock at Mock Orange.

MoSpeed TT Series!

We'd like to invite everyone to come join us for the MoSpeed Time Trial Series presented by Mock Orange Bikes. To kick things off for 2011 we figured it would be a good idea to get the ball rolling on some early season fitness. This series will be an excellent way to see how you measure up against your buddies and also give you a gauge of fitness on a bi-weekly basis. Don't worry, each event runs every other Tuesday opposite of the Dixie Classic races.

We encourage everyone and anyone to come out and give our TT course a shot. No matter what kind of two wheeled machine you are riding there's a slot for everyone. Given that guys using all that Aero equipment might have a little advantage we are offering up a few prizes for the fastest times on a road bike with no Aero gear, i.e. Eddy Merckx style. The first race of the series kicks off on March 29th at 6:00p sharp.

LOCATION: Due to some scheduling conflicts we are having to re-route the TT course to a new location. The new start will begin on Farmington Rd. where it meets Shallowford/Courtney Huntsville Rd. at the Battle Branch Cafe. We are encouraging riders to park at the church on Shallowford Rd. approximately 1/4 mile past where Farmington Rd. comes in. Church is on the right.  We will have a Police office directing traffic at the start.  After that you are expected to obey all traffic laws.

ROUTE: View the route and elevation here: http://www.mapmyride.com/routes/fullscreen/28305796/.  We're pretty sure you already know this route all too well ;)

Time & Registration: The first rider will roll out at 6:00pm sharp. Riders will continue to roll out in 1 minute intervals until 7:00pm. We do have a max rider limit of 60 riders so we are encouraging people to sign up and get a time slot in advance. In order to register either call or come by the shop and reserve a slot. Registration is $10 or you can sign up for the whole series for $50. On-Site registration is available with no silly late fee or anything. We'll put riders in the first available time slots on a first come first serve basis.

Check out our Flyer and download a copy for yourself to hang on to if ya like.  Information is also available on our website on the MoSpeed TT Series Page.

Turbo Nights!

This is just a friendly reminder to everyone out there looking to squeeze in a spin class after work.  On Wednesday nights at 6:00pm here at the shop we are having free Spin Classes.  None other than our esteemed colleague in suffering Mr. Joe Carpisassi will be leading the classes through some heart busting intervals.  Joe has been an elite racer for an indefinite amount of time and really knows how to beat you down for an hour and make those legs burn.

We look forward to seeing you here!

Cheers

2011 Road Bikes....

Ridley

We've got some fancy new bikes rolling in the door here for 2011 folks!  MOB is now carrying 2011 Ridley road bikes including their popular Noah, claimed to be the fastest bike in the world due to it's aerodynamic qualities, as well as the Damocles, a highly efficient, snappy and comfortable ride.  Be sure to stop by soon to check out these beauties.
FYI.....Our local Pro-Am cycling squad Team Mountain Khakis will be riding the Ridley Damocles for 2011.

Also for 2011 we are keeping  a good stock of the new Bianchi Carbon road bikes.  These were a hit last year and 2011 is looking to be even better.  New to the lineup for Bianchi is the Sempre.  This is essentially the Infinito's brother with a more traditional geometry.  The frame is constructed with Bianchi's popular Monotech Carbon Fiber which offers a fast, stiff and efficient ride while also maximizing comfort.
